Determines the propensity of the grain of the leather to crack during folding; this test is applicable to all types of sole leather. A leather sample of determined thickness is folded around a series of numbered mandrels of decreasing diameter until cracking or the use of the smallest mandrel. The crack index is then calculated by multiplying the thickness of the specimen by the number of the mandrel.
